YOUth&I Issue 2 – Submission guidelines

Issue 2

中文版 | русский | Français | Español | Polskie

We are delighted to announce Issue 2 of YOUth&I is currently accepting submissions!

Prompt: “It’s their turn to listen”

Please check out our video and review the submission guidelines below. We are excited to work with you to publish as many contributions by intersex youth as we can!

 Who can submit?

Intersex people aged 30 or below from anywhere in the world.

If you are younger than 18 years old, we will get in touch with you to talk further about publication risks.

Anonymous submissions or works to be published under a pseudonym are welcomed.

What can I submit?

We are accepting any kind of writing and artwork – anything that can be published in print! We have previously published essays, poetry, photography, drawings and comic strips. Look through Issue 1 to see what we have previously published: https://darlington.org.au/youthandi/.

The prompt for this issue is “It’s their turn to listen”. Intersex people have a history of being silencing by doctors, family and society, and are often told there is no one else like us or that we shouldn’t share our experiences. But we say no more! Young intersex voices need to be heard.

You can use this prompt as much or as little in your submission as you like. You do not need to submit something related to this theme, but you can use it to help guide you in developing a submission.

Submissions must be your own original work, unpublished and not under consideration elsewhere.

Writings can be up to two pages. Get in touch if you would like to submit something longer and we can discuss.

What language can I submit in?

You may submit in any language. YOUth&I is an English-based publication. If you submit works in a language other than English, we will do what we can to translate your piece and publish your original piece alongside a translated version.

Depending on the language you submit in, we may need some guidance from you and/or a regional intersex organisation as to who may assist in the translation work. Please get in touch if there is someone you know who is able to translate your work to English, including yourself.

Copyright

Copyright will remain with the contributor although YOUth&I retains online and print publication rights in perpetuity. We ask that you acknowledge YOUth&I in any subsequent publication.

How much will I be paid?

You will be paid AUD$100 for each published piece.

Can I submit multiple pieces?

Yes, you can send in as many pieces as you like, however depending on the number of contributions we receive we may not publish them all. You will be paid for each published contribution.

When do I need to submit by?

We are accepting submissions until Friday 13 August. We may be able to accept submissions after this time on a case-by-case basis, but please contact us early to let us know if there are expected delays.

We encourage early submissions to give us time to work with you to edit your work. If your work needs to be translated, please try and submit your work early or let us know what language you are planning to submit in.

We understand COVID has been a particularly difficult time for everyone and has impacted some individuals and regions much more than others. Please get in touch with us early on if you are interested in submitting but are having trouble with the timeframe or other issues, and we can see what we can do to accommodate you.

How do I submit?

Please send an email to youthandi@darlington.org.au with the following information:

  • Your submission attached, preferably in a Word document
  • The title of your submission
  • Your name or pseudonym
  • Your age (or at least confirm you are between 18-30 or are below 18 years of age)
  • The language your piece is written in, if it is not in English
  • Your country of origin (optional)
  • Pronouns (optional)

If you have any concerns about your privacy please contact us at youthandi@darlington.org.au.

We understand that internet connectivity may be difficult. If you have any problems, please contact us by email at youthandi@darlington.org.au or on Whatsapp: +61 452 590 165.

What happens if my work is accepted for publication?

You will be notified as soon as possible after the submission closing date as to whether your work(s) will be published.

We will work with you if there are any edits required and will only publish with your final approval. If we need to translate the work, we will do our best to get it translated. We might contact you if we need assistance in finding a suitable translator.

If you are under 18 years of age, we will get in touch with you to talk about publication risks.

We will ask you for a short biography to publish with your work. This is entirely optional, and you may choose to provide nothing and submit your work anonymously.

Once everything is lined up for publication, we will pay you AUD$100 per contribution. We will contact you on how that payment is to be made and are open to flexible options to accommodate payment efficiently and safely.

Where and when will it be published?

YOUth&I will be available for free online. If we are able to print copies of YOUth&I, these will be distributed to some stockists in Australia and New Zealand. We will also look to provide some copies to regional intersex organisations.

We are aiming to publish YOUth&I by the end of the year.
